Stephens & Smith Omaha Foundation team recently applied its quality craftsmanship to the West Dodge Office Building at 180th and West Dodge streets in Omaha. The three-story construction project, led by Foreman Travis Jenkinson, included a parking garage on the first floor, as well as office space and two more floors of designated office space. The crew poured 230 cubic yards of concrete footings and 600 linear feet of 8-inch-by-15-foot walls with brick ledge — a reinforced concrete bearing which supports the weight of finished materials such as brick, stone or other veneers. Project Manager Ryan Sadil said the crew did an outstanding job adhering to numerous difficult form designs. “Above all the window and door openings was a 16-inch wide steel-embedded ledge for the brick to rest on,” he said. “Forms were designed to have a seam at those elevations so the embedded assembly could be placed between them.” Additionally, several of the concrete pours had to be done in two separate lifts because of long window bays, and Jenkinson said there were more than 35 corners in just 150 feet of wall, something he’s never seen before. “It was definitely one of the most complex and rewarding jobs I’ve tackled,” he said. The office project began in May and was completed in July.
