(Grand Island, NE) A new month meant a new record for Stephens & Smith’s Flatwork team. As October started, they poured 43,636 square feet, or 910 cubic yards, in a single paving placement at Old Dominion Freight Line in Grand Island, Nebraska.
“It required a lot of planning – how to go about doing the job, having enough manpower and getting it all done,” Flatwork Foreman Stacie Jensen said.
That single paving placement was just part of the parking lot, which stretches more than 255,000 square feet and includes an area for employee parking. The Flatwork team was assisted by Ott Concrete Construction and TWC Concrete on the large project.
“With the general contractor out of Utah and TWC Concrete out of Ohio, we had a lot of hands in the mix,” Jensen said.
Since each company has a different process, Jensen said there were a lot of phone calls to ensure everyone was on the same page.
“Sometimes it takes a while to get used to the way the new project’s general contractor does something compared to the last job,” he said. “After a while you get used to it, and everything has been good out here.”
The work at Old Dominion Freight Line included projects for both the Flatwork and Foundation departments. Foundation poured footings for the main building and the ramp walls into the loading dock area, while Flatwork employees poured the floor slab in the main building and the parking lot.
“It was a complete team effort to get the project done,” Jensen said.
