Before Haidar Kazem and his crew had finished pouring the last of several elevated outdoor steps, the Stephens & Smith Flatwork foreman knew this APS Custom Construction Inc., Elkhorn, Nebraska, residential project would be a distinctive challenge. “There were 6 inches between each 15-foot-wide step, so it looked like we were floating,” he said. “We really had to squeeze our brains to figure out how to get it done because we’d never done anything like this before.” But Kazem, much like those he oversees, relishes a break in continuity, finding a way to wire LED lighting using expansion joint foam throughout the 4-inch-thick broadcast-colored staircase. It was something he admitted none of his crew members had ever encountered. “Typically, you have an inch or two between each step, but because of the gap, we had to really measure out the strips to cover,” he said. “It certainly tried us, and I think we appreciated that extra challenge.” Additionally, the Flatwork team poured a large driveway and three colored patio pads: one for a grilling area, one for a hot tub and another for patio furniture. The Stephens & Smith Specialty Products team, led by Ryan Good, installed a double-quartz epoxy finish inside one of two 600-square-foot garages. Kazem notes how everyone worked hard to stay on schedule, and the remodel was beautifully done. “Everything was colored except for the driveway,” he said. “And it looks breathtaking — definitely something out of this world.”
